Spiritual Psychology

A diverse need exists for a counselling space orientated toward liberating the individual to share and express their holistic experience, that which they are entering the counselling process with; and  having this held and honoured, even if it is a departure from traditional psychology. Spiritual psychology acknowledges the metaphysical experiences of the client. It includes what holds true for them in matters of: connection to a higher power, spiritual practice, faith, religion, personal beliefs, culture and tradition; and by holding these in heart and mind bring them into alignment with their psychological and spiritual goals. Thus the individual's process is guided by conscious intention. The need for inclusion of the client's spiritual experience in relation to their psychological dis-ease is necessary as it forms part of the meaning they may derive from their challenges. And as I have witnessed countless times, profoundly influences the manner in which they deal with these challenges. Aptly described by Gary Zukav as "aligning personality with soul's purpose", spiritual psychology prioritizes conversation around the soul and how to nurture our connection to it through our journey with mental health and healing.

Conscious Relationship Counselling

Conscious relationship counselling intends to assist individuals to identify what is necessary to go beyond the functionality of their relationship, and enable a means to relate rather that attach. Conscious relationships often gifts us with the ability to see ourselves more clearly through the experiences we have with another. The counselling process encourages each individual to recognize the sovereignty of the other and requests of them to consciously commit to respecting and honouring this, while simultaneously committing to their own individual work as a contribution to growth and harmony in the relationship. This process requires empathy, a contemplative attitude, willingness to become aware of how their behaviours impacts the other- whether positively or negatively. Compassionate engagement and interaction is fundamental to the counselling process, and clients are guided to use reflective language with each other. Key areas for exploration and awareness is; temperament, attachment styles, shared values and masculine and feminine energy, and how this contributes to the dynamic in the relationship. This approach is relevant to a counselling process with couples, families and groups, and has been a clarifying approach as a form of pre-marital counselling.
